A beacon of new beginnings: Lighthouse Gate signs restored
With a new coat of paint and fresh flowers, the signs on the gate to the town of Wareham might look a little different to residents.
The signs which read, “Welcome to Wareham, Inc. 1739” and “Gateway to Cape Cod” on the other were originally designed in 1997 by Wareham Garden Club member, Mary Ann Patrick and feature a cranberry leaf design on the outer corner of two of the four boards.
The original signs were made around the same time by a sign maker, Paul J. White.
After about 28 years, the signs had faded and needed to be refurbished. The Wareham Garden Club members voted to fund the restoration of the signs as a special club project for 2025.
Current Civic Beautification Co-Chair Connie Wiliszowski and long-time club member Mary Beth Cormier worked to secure bids. With approval from the Town Administrator and support from Municipal Maintenance, the signs were delivered not far to Yankee Woodcarvers of Plymouth.
Mike McCarthy restored the signs using cranberry colored paint and gold leaf for the lettering. While that was happening, Municipal Maintenance refreshed the white paint on the gates.
Garden club member Sue Scipione expanded the type and variety of plants at the site.
