Riptides make a splash at New England Championship meet
The Riptides swim team competed in a New England wide meet on March 16, breaking several records and earning a handful of medals.
The Gleason Family YMCA Riptides is a youth swim team that serves kids ages 6 to 22 from Wareham and surrounding towns. The team gives kids an opportunity to compete in swimming competitions throughout the state.
The team competed against swimmers from 50 teams across the region in the New England Swim Championship.
Riptides Coach Brooke Michaud explained that kids who place anywhere from first to eighth earn a medal.
The medalists from the Riptides are as follows:
Jason Anderson of Wareham placed eighth in the 200 meter individual medley and sixth in the 200 meter backstroke earning him a team record.
Chris Glover of Plymouth placed fifth in the 200 meter freestyle which set a new team record, placed sixth in the 50 meter freestyle and placed eighth in the 100 meter freestyle which also set a new team record.
Noella Michaud of Rochester finished third in the 50 meter butterfly and second in the 100 meter butterfly.
Charlie Hall of Mattapoisett placed fourth in the 100 meter free style, eighth in the 50 meter freestyle and fourth in the 50 meter breast stroke.
Ava Gagliardi of Rochester finished sixth in the 50 meter backstroke.
Sam Reece of Wareham, Peter Voci of Marion, Oliver Hancock of Plymouth and Henrik Obrebski of Rochester made up the eight and under boys relay team and they took third in the medley and freestyle relay.
The eight and under girls relay team consisted of Ava Gagliardi, Emelie Michaud of Rochester, Molly Beson and Isabella Duran took fifth in both the medley and freestyle relay.
The boys 15 and over relay team consisting of Liam McGee, Zach Travis, Riley Karo and Jake Iappini broke team records in both the 200 meter medley and 400 meter freestyle relay.
