Acushnet residents propose new play-based learning daycare
Where the former First Citizen’s Federal Credit Union sits will soon be home to Scribbles, the newest preschool learning center in Wareham.
Acushnet residents Melissa and Marc Cordeira are looking to open the preschool after Melissa stepped down from her kindergarten teaching job in Easton.
“I decided to leave my teaching job for what I believe in, which is play-based learning so I decided my dream would be to open my own daycare and do things my way,” Melissa said.
She described play-based learning as an effective alternative to the stereotypical classroom setting.
“[The kids] learn through playing, they learn through talking and problem solving, not sitting and doing academics all day long,” she said.
The former First Citizen’s Federal Credit Union bank located at 396 Onset Avenue was the first building the couple looked at for Scribbles and after visiting a few other locations, Melissa said they decided Wareham would be the place for them.
In order to get the preschool up and running, the couple is working with Bill Lockwood of Lockwood Architects in Onset to retrofit the old bank into a preschool.
Lockwood said the major change happening to the exterior of the building will be removing the drive-up window and putting a play area in its place.
“The preschool will require direct access to the play area, that’s a state law,” Lockwood said.
On the inside, Lockwood said the teller counters and other bank furniture will be removed to make this space work as a classroom.
