‘That click’: Vikings softball dominates in strong start to season

Apr 15, 2025

The Wareham Vikings softball team is off to a hot start this season, remaining undefeated through their first four games and beating those opponents by an average of 12 runs.

"The girls are working hard, they're busting their tails off at practice and it's paying off," said Head Coach Rudy Cadena.

The Vikings have put up 54 runs in their first four games. Cadena doesn’t credit the early season success to batting practice and fielding ground balls —- but instead the team's mentality.

"It's important to be humble, these girls know they're talented and it can be a special year if they stay humble," Cadena said. "We need to know our weaknesses and work on them and use our strengths to our advantage."

Junior catcher Savannah Varden said staying humble happens on and off the field.

"We're still academic leaders in school and we stay together no matter what," Varden said. "We're not posting on social media or bragging about our wins, we're all just happy together."

Cadena added that the girls have spent a lot of time playing together and the bond between them can take them further than anything else.

"They're all like a family," he said. "They've been playing together for a long time and that click is coming this year."

Junior Jolee Anderson is a pitcher and said the support she received Friday, April 11 in a game against Rising Tide Charter Public School helped her record a complete game no-hitter.

"We came together as a team, communicated well on and off the field and our bench was loud the whole entire time which kept me going on the mound," Anderson said.

With no seniors on the roster, she said her and the other juniors have had to step up as leaders on and off the field to help build a strong team dynamic.

"We ran captain's practices that everyone went to and do a lot of team bonding outside of practice," Anderson said. "We always talk about if we are going to wear our jerseys to school or wear our hair a certain way."

As a pitcher, Anderson works closely with Varden who said no matter what, she and Anderson work together to help bring the team closer.

"Me and Jolee go back and forth so many times but as pitcher and catcher we have to get along no matter what," Varden said. "Us coming together and showing the team that we're a family no matter what is important."

Junior third baseman and shortstop Liv Lacava said establishing a strong bond early in the season will help set them up to continue their strong 2025 season.

"We know how to move forward as a team and communicate with each other," she said. "We know how we can get better and go from there."
