Yo ho ho! Pirates take over the library
The Seven Seas and the Wareham Free Library didn't look much different from each other as children donned eye-patches and gave up their land-lubber lives.
Captain Luca's Pirate Adventure set sail and gathered dozens of scurvy dogs Wednesday, July 16 to have children learn what it takes to be a pirate. With arts and crafts, pirate games and education, those attending got a chance to earn their sea-legs.
Children's Service librarian Marcia Hickey got into character wearing a pirate hat and making plans to be nefarious in local waters.
"I've always wanted to be a pirate and this is not a one and done thing," she joked. "I'll be cruising Onset Bay."
Kids played relay races and hot potato with Captain Blackbeard's skull to earn gold doubloons. Using compasses and learning about navigation, the sailors also discovered Captain Luca's hidden treasure.
Among the physical activities, pirates like 10-year-old Jerome Herbert made flags for their future ships.
"My ships name would be Springflower," he said.
For 6-year-old MJ Whalen and 7-year-old James Loughman, they said they would be sworn enemies out on the open water.
MJ said he would be an evil pirate with plans to sink every ship he sees while James wanted to be nice.
"I would probably sink James," MJ said.
"I would go on MJ's boat and fire the cannon at his face," James said.
Luca Rebussini, or, Captain Luca said meeting kids like Jerome, MJ and James were his favorite parts about assuming his pirate persona.
"Meeting people and traveling all over the place — this job takes me nationwide now. So, I'm really enjoying it," he said.
Rebussini said that the library event was his first time in Wareham and that he likes to see how excited the kids get to learn. He said that if you love your job you never work a day in your life.
"The parents get involved, people come to the libraries and really take part in the community and engage in it. That's what really makes it all come together for me," he said.
