State champ Vikings get a win in home opener
The Wareham High School boys basketball team took their home court for the first time since winning last year's Division Four State championship as they took on Fairhaven High School.
The game was played Monday, Dec. 23, and the Vikings defeated the Blue Devils by a score of 62 to 51. Head Coach Steve Faniel explained his team is young and still finding their groove but being able to win games now shows the team has promise.
"We're still gelling and we're still trying to improve," said Faniel. "We're nowhere near where we need to be but to still be able to get victories is a good thing."
The Vikings are coming off not one, but two consecutive state championships and despite graduating most of the team, Faniel said he wants to try and maintain the level of excellence set by former Viking teams.
"We're working on becoming a team," said Faniel. "We got a couple guys back from last year and we got some new guys this year and we learning how to trust each other."
Moving forward, Faniel said he plans to use his team's speed to their advantage and what they lack in size, they have to make up for with toughness and effort.
"Our expectation is to be better tomorrow than we were today," said Faniel.
