Cars packed for the holidays with spirit of giving
On Dec. 7 several police cruisers were full, but not with detainees and a school bus neared capacity without a single child in a seat.
The Wareham Police Department hosted its Stuff-a-Cruiser event Saturday, parking vehicles out front of Walmart and Target and encouraging passing shoppers to donate toys for families in need. While on Main Street, several bus drivers organized the Transportation Department’s Stuff-a-Bus event.
“This is one of the things the Wareham Police Department looks forward to every year, said Police Chief Walter Correia. “All the officers look forward to it, we’ve been doing it for 25 years it seems like.”
Correia said each year the officers have a friendly competition between the Walmart team and the Target team for who can collect more donations.
By 11 a.m. on Saturday the cruiser at Target was full, while the Walmart location had filled a trailer.
Officer Calib LaRue said community members had been very generous throughout the day, noting that they had received more bikes than usual.
“It's great for the kids, we try to do it the same day as the parade, we call it Wareham day,” said Larue.
Across town next to the Main Street Fire Station, bus drivers Lori Ellis, Kathy Fritzell and Lisa Lenhares had just finished setting up a school bus with decorations and snacks in preparation for donations.
Ellis said in years passed they have filled the bus entirely with gifts and she hoped that by the time the parade passed by later that afternoon, they would do the same this year.
Donations from each location were given to Turning Point, a non-profit that helps families in need.
