Trash day at Onset Beach leads to some peculiar finds

Onset Beach will soon see an influx of people with summer right around the corner and community members got together to help the beach before the rush.

The Onset Bay Center held a beach cleanup Thursday, April 24 where close to 30 people came out to pick up trash and litter left behind on Onset Beach.

Many of the attendees reported the most common items found were cigarette butts, empty cans and plenty of the small plastic liquor bottles known as nips.

“I found a couple of beer caps from companies I didn’t know still existed,” said Alicia Holmes.

Obscure bottle caps weren’t the oddest finds of the day, some found stuff that made them question how it could have gotten on the beach.

“We found the cover of an old speaker box at the end of the pier,” Holmes said.

Others found odd shapes of toys and said they wanted to come out not just to enjoy sunshine on the beach, but to instill the importance of environmental advocacy in young kids.

“I live only two blocks away, I’m always on this beach and I’ve got a two-year-old son so I’m doing this for his future,” said Curtis Van Worn.

Van Worn attended the cleanup with his two-year-old son and said he wants to show his son how he can help the environment.

“I try to lead by example and the best way for him to learn is to see what I’m doing and then he wants to do the same,” he said.

Len Boutin is a member of the Wareham Land Trust who said he is no stranger to doing what he can for the environment. While his trash bag remained mostly empty during the cleanup, he said it’s important for everyone to stay on top of it.

“I’ll come back in two months and there will be trash,” he said.
