Well over 100 kids headed to the fields behind the John W. Decas Elementary School on Saturday, April 4, to try out for the Wareham Tigers’ NFL Flag Football Program.

“This is a long time coming,” said Tigers President Jared Chadwick. “Everybody’s been cooped up since covid.”
Although the Tigers held try-outs last year, the flag football season had to be canceled due to the pandemic. 

At the start of the day, more than 120 kids of all ages had signed up for flag football, and Damon Solomon, the flag football coordinator, said he expected 75 more kids to sign up over the course of the day. 

The try-outs help coaches assemble teams, but all kids are always accepted onto a team. 

“We never turn a kid away for skills or payment,” Chadwick said. “No kid is ever turned away from the Tigers.”

The kids ran drills to show off their skills maneuvering around cones, sprinting, catching the football and grabbing a flag. 

There was a special guest at the event: The Tigers’ new mascot. The mascot doesn’t have a name yet, as officials decided to let the kids vote on the mascot’s name.

The Tigers held the try-outs at the Decas School because they are the only youth sports program without dedicated fields. 

At the April 10 Town Meeting, there will be two warrant articles related to the Tigers’ quest to rent fields at Westfield off Charlotte Furnace Road, next to the fields for Wareham Youth Soccer and Wareham Girls Softball.
