The John B. Dixon Recycling Center held recycling events from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 7, taking papers and appliances off of people's hands.
"We try to have special events throughout the year for hard to recycle items," said volunteer Amanda Cobb, who reported a total of 128 cars dropping off items on Saturday.
Electronics recycling company eWaste New England was on hand to collect various electronic items, from PCs and laptops to cell phones, tablets, gaming systems and more.
The Great White Shred, a veteran-owned business based in Sandwich, was at the recycling center to shred people’s personal documents. This service was free and open to all.
William Harrison of Plymouth was among those who brought boxes of files to shred. "There's a lot of satisfaction in getting that done today," he said.
The Great White Shred owner Gil Ricci said he'd shredded well over of ton of paper so far that day, and that he enjoys the process. "It's cathartic," he said.
The shredded paper gets upcycled rather than ending up in a landfill. "To me it's a no-brainer," Ricci said.
The center's volunteers are equally passionate about eco-friendly practices.
Sandy Antista lives in New Jersey but owns a home in Wareham and volunteers regularly at the center. "I strongly believe in recycling," she said.
Many in the area seem to agree, as the center was busy throughout the rainy morning.
"It's been very busy, and a big success," said volunteer Jen Grady.
