Varoujan Garabedian, 92

Varoujan Garabedian (USN Ret.), 92, of Wareham, died Sunday, Nov. 18 at Tobey Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Lawrence, he was the son of the late Hagop and Osanna (Ashdjian) Garabedian. Mr. Garabedian served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years retiring in 1963. He was a hard hat salvage diver and served on board several destroyers in the Navy.  After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, starting as a deckhand and retired after 33 years as a marine traffic controller on the Cape Cod Canal.

He was a member of the Tin Can Sailors Association, the Wareham/New Bedford Lodge of Elks, the Dudley Brown VFW Post, and the Disabled American Veterans Association. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea.

Survivors include his two sons, Varoujan J. Garabedian of Onset, and Steven M. Garabedian of Wareham; his daughter, Marion Bass of Belmore, Long Island; his grandchildren, Erica Bass, Britney Bass, and Kaitlyn Garabedian; his nieces and nephews, John and Ann Pacheco, George, Kyle, Kevin and Alexis Garabedian. Also surviving is his close friend, Jeanne LeMire of Wareham.

Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service that will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. Interment will follow in Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26 at the funeral home.
