Saturday, June 14
New place to play
The new and improved Lopes Playground will celebrate a grand opening ceremony June 14 at 11 a.m. with a brand new playground, new walking paths and so much more.
Changes to the playground include two age specific areas for play, one for kids age 2 to 5 and another for kids age 5 to 12.
The brand new accessible playground will also include two zip lines, slides, an accessible merry-go-round, swings, climbers, an inclusive see-saw and many interactive play panels for kids to enjoy on June 14.
Play ball!
The 98th season of Cape Cod League baseball in Wareham is set to begin Saturday, June 14 as the Wareham Gatemen prepare for their season opener.
Opening day will commence at 6 p.m. as the Gatemen take on the Hyannis Harbor Hawks at Spillane Field located off of Viking Drive.
Admission to the game is free but donations will be accepted at the gate.
Fans can expect several ballpark classics at the game such as hotdogs, merchandise for sale and a 50/50 raffle which Gatemen President Glen Hannington said will feature some good prizes.
What’s the buzz
Join science educator Mary Beers and the Wareham Land Trust on a guided walk and talk about cicadas, the infamous insects that haven’t been seen on the Cape since 2008. This walk will take place on Saturday June 14, from 9 to 11 a.m at the Redbrook Trail Network.
The group will meet at Lyman Reserve Parking Lot, head of the Bay Road and Red Brook Road on the Plymouth/Wareham border and continue to the trails from there.
The event is free, but there is limited space and registration is necessary. Register at warehamlandtrust.org.
Flag Day ceremony
Once a patriot, always a patriot. On Saturday, June 14 at 4 p.m., the American Legion Post 220 will be holding a Flag Day and a U.S. birthday ceremony on post grounds located at 777 Main Street.
The ceremonies will include the dignified disposal of unserviceable flags. All are encouraged to bring flags to be burned at the pit. For further information, contact Joe Gracia at 508-995-4481 or Tootsie Russell at 508-285-3167.
BBQ for the red, white and blue
The Redmen and the Degree of Pocahontas will host a chicken barbecue on Saturday, June 14 at the Redmen Hall at 745 Main Street. Doors open at 1 p.m. and food will be served at 2 p.m.
There will be raffles, food, and fun and all proceeds from the event will go to the Home for Our Troops charity. Members of the organization who have served, past or present, will be honored at a brief ceremony during the event.

Vroom Vroom!
Want to see wheel-y awesome cars? The Onset VFW located at 4 Gibbs Ball Park Road will be hosting it's second car show Sunday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Trophies will be given out for best car, best truck, oldest vehicle, classic car and hot rod. A scholarship will be presented to Upper Cape Auto Body in honor of Kenneth Deluze Sr. Raffles and music will be offered for a $10 donation. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
Monday, June 16
New look to Bayview
Bayview Park is set to reopen after months of construction Monday, June 16 where visitors can enjoy the new accessible walkways, and look out over Onset Bay from the newly restored Gazebo.
There is still more work to be done to fully restore the park which will be done in mid-July.
