Students and staff fill Wareham schools for first day

The end of August also meant the end of summer for Wareham Public Schools as students and staff filled the halls once again.
Aug. 27 was the first day of school for Wareham students first grade and older. Many kids were excited to come back to school, while missing the fun they had over summer break.
Second grader Navya Patel said she wanted summer to last longer because she got to go to her favorite cousin’s house and visit Canada, but she is looking forward to making art and playing games in P.E.
First grader Sophia Henderson spent her summer playing on waterslides, painting and going to the beach. Now back to school, she is looking forward to school projects, especially arts and crafts.
“I’m excited to see you learn new things and make some new friends this year,” mom Sarah Estrella said.
At the high school, students are looking forward to being in specialized classes and clubs while enjoying the privileges that come with getting older. Freshmen Caden Howes and Sebastian Avilla said they enjoyed their astronomy and biology classes respectively, and Avilla said he’s excited for the drama club.
Eighth grader Jackson Ip said he’s excited to join the school’s Dungeons & Dragons club and that he enjoyed moving to the high school building. “The lunch is a lot better here,” he said.
Senior Joseph Medeiros is excited he can attend class with his friends and that he gets privileges as a senior, such as being able to exit the school building. He said he loves school, and his favorite class is marine biology because animals are fun and expressive.
“I always like learning about animals, marine life, life in general, and I want to do zoology when I grow up,” Medeiros said.
Like many students, staff are also excited to be back at school. Bus driver Lisa Linhares said she’s looking forward to “happy kids.”
“I’m very glad to be back to work because I missed seeing the kids all summer, and they’re all pretty excited to be back to school too,” she said.
