Young writers, artists and a pack of “comfort dogs” gathered in the lobby of the Gleason Family YMCA on Aug. 21 to learn who would head home with trophies from the Dog Park Affiliation of Wareham’ annual Unleash the PAWsibilities contest.
Open to kids age 5 to 16 from Wareham and nearby communities, the contest invited art and written work on broad themes of pets and animals. Entries were judged in three separate age categories.
Nova Lomp, scored a trifecta the 9-12-year-old age group, taking home trophies for her essay on a baby robin, drawing of her pets and the “Best in Show” trophy for overall work.
Other winners included sisters Ava and Kailyn Ostiguy, Molly Wallace and Cheyenne Lovell.
All the entries were displayed in the Y as awards were handed out. They are now headed for display in the Main Street Post Office.
This year the contest was dedicated to Wareham’s late Mary Nyman. The author, poet, painter, teacher, photographer and jewelry designer died in June at the age of 85. A former contest judge, Nyman had been part of “Unleash” for more than seven years.
Joining winners and their families at the Y were nine four-legged members of Wareham’s Comfort Canines group. Taking a break from their typical outing to an assisted living or healthcare facility, the comforters took no break from the routine of soaking up the love.
