Wareham High School Senior and JROTC cadet Emma Sylvia was honored by the Select Board with a special presentation from the town after being awarded the Legion of Valor Award with Bronze Cross.

The Select Board honored Sylvia in front of Matthew Stanton, Senior Army Instructor for the program and her parents Katie and Robert Sylvia at the Dec. 10th Select Board meeting.

"The award represents countless hours of service to the community, excellence in academics and demonstrated exceptional leadership," said Select Board member Sarah Corbitt.

Sylvia was given the award in November and is the only JROTC cadet in Massachusetts to receive the award received the award this year.

"You have to be a well rounded cadet and work very hard in extra curricular activities and academics," said Stanton. "You have to be involved with many of the teams the JROTC offers and you have to live a life of integrity and responsibility."

Sylvia said she plans on attending college after high school to become a kindergarten teacher, a goal her JROTC experience will help her accomplish.

"It shows me different ways to handle different situations and the right and wrong way to do things," said Sylvia.
