Remote learning to begin Monday for students

Mar 18, 2020

Although schools are closed until April 6, teachers, staff, and administrators are hard at work, and students will begin learning remotely on Monday, March 23.

Because the first week of school closure will be made up at the end of the year, like snow days, students aren’t expected to do work at home during that time.

Meanwhile, teachers and staff are working to plan how they will remotely teach students for at least the next two weeks.

“Our staff have certainly stepped up to the plate. Everybody is doing what they need to do and 100 percent above,” Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood said. “It’s heartwarming to see all the positive energy that everyone is showing and willingness to help.”

Most students will be doing schoolwork online, but not all families in the district have access to the internet. Shaver-Hood said that teachers are working to put together paper packets for students, and also suggested that families could look into the two months of free internet currently being offered by Comcast at

The school district’s website,, has a “Coronavirus Information and Updates” button where all relevant information will be aggregated.

While schools are closed, bagged grab-and-go breakfast and lunch meals are available for free for all students. The meals can be picked up from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Monday through Friday at the following locations: Wareham Middle School, the Bandshell at Onset, Gleason Family YMCA parking lot, the Woods at Wareham, the Cromesett Road pumping station near Terry Lane, Brandy Hill, Shangri La Playground, Decas Elementary School, the West Wareham School parking lot, and the Cranberry Highway lot next to Gold World, which replaces the Swifts Beach location. To pick up meals, children must be present or the person picking up the meals must present the student’s ID due to state restrictions.

Shaver-Hood encouraged families to stay safe and follow public health guidelines while schools are closed.
