Onset Cape Verdean Festival awards scholarships

The Onset Cape Verdean Festival Association has awarded eight graduating seniors $1,000 scholarships.  

The scholarships have been an annual tradition for more than 15 years.

“We would like to wish all the recipients the best of luck,” said Association member Lynn Spinola. “2020 has definitely been different for this graduating class. I hope they all use this difficult time we have all been placed in as a learning tool in life.”

She added that the students can do anything they put their mind to, and that they should reach for the stars.

Four Wareham High grads were awarded scholarships: Joseph Silvia III, Bristol Community College, parents Della and Joseph Silvia Jr.; Jeffrey Goodman Jr., UMass Lowell, parents Sincere and Jeffrey Goodman Sr.; Julieanne Matthews, Providence College, parents Regina and Ken Matthews; and Kayla Cruz, Bridgewater State University, parents Cuada Pagan and Jorge Cruz.

Four other students from other schools also received scholarships: Aliyah Christmas, Middleboro High grad, University of Hartford, parents Karen Mendes-Christmas and Sharneff Christmas; Taelyce Depina, a St. Patrick Academy, RI grad from Providence, RI, Southern New Hampshire University, parent Candida DePina; Davis McCain, a Cardinal Gibbons High, North Carolina, grad headed to Stanford University, parents Lori and Wendell McCain of Chapel Hill, NC; and Olivia Ramos, a St. Raphael Academy, RI grad, Quinnipiac University, parents Yolande and Len Ramos Jr. of Providence, RI.
