Old Saint Nick makes a stop at Redmen Hall
With a gaggle of elves and Mrs. Claus at his side, Santa spent a day away from the workshop Sunday, Dec. 14 to meet and greet the children of Wareham at Redmen Hall.
Roy Brenton has been using his ability to grow a beard to give back to the community since the pandemic. Donning the signature red suit every year to spread the joy of Christmas in the gateway town, Brenton and his wife Laureen make sure to bring the magic to Wareham once a year.
From snowball fights to an appearance by the Grinch, the Brentons said the joy in throwing an event like the Christmas party is seeing how the kids light up. At 67, he said he wouldn't have pictured himself where he was Sunday.
"I mean I'm choreographing a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer dance with these kids," he said.
The kids, or, elves, are comprised of mostly family and friends. Each special helper is a volunteer who spends their time making the magic for guests.
Two elves, Twirlie Elf and Lola Elf played by Rosaleen Enright and Scarlett Fleury respectfully, were ready to help at any moment. Although they acted as Santa's assistants, the pair did ask for some extra special gifts this year.
Rosaleen asked for a cat and Scarlett asked for a dog. A guaranteed spot on the nice list for Rosaleen, save for a few fights with her sister, might not be the same for Scarlett.
"I think I'd be on the inbetween list," she said.
The nicest things the two did this year was volunteering their time.
Guests like Addison Pina told Santa what they wanted for the fast-approaching Christmas. Ready for school to be out and to dig into her gifts, Addison said she didn't do anything worthy of being on the naughty list this year.
"I helped with my moms three babies," Addison said.
The triplets had their turn on Santa's lap thanks to Addison's help, which she hopes will get her the Barbie car she asked for on her list.
The event wasn't just all fun and games. With bins available to donate toys to Toys for Tots, the day was all about giving back according to Brenton.
He gave special thanks to Tim Pickett, Steve and Elizabeth Wingert and Meaghan Pina for their help to make the event as magical as it was.
"We're all amateurs, but the spirit sure is high," Brenton said.
