Honor the fallen this Memorial Day
Memorial Day ceremonies honoring the nation’s fallen service members will take place throughout Wareham, Monday, May 25 organized by the Veterans Day Parade Organization.
This year’s observances will also recognize the town’s role in the 250th anniversary of the nation, with commemorative banners and displays appearing around the community.
The observances will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Dudley L. Brown Square in on Onset Avenue a site dedicated in 1968 to honor residents who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
The schedule will continue at 9 a.m. at Agawam Cemetery on Great Neck Road, established in the early 18th century with graves dating to 1730 and veterans buried from the Revolutionary War to the present.
At 9:30 a.m., a ceremony will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery on Tihonet Road, which has served the town’s Catholic community since the mid-19th century and includes veterans from the 1800s to today.
The program will move to Centre Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Tihonet Road, one of Massachusetts’ largest historic burial grounds, with records dating to the 1640s and veterans spanning from the Revolutionary War to the present.
At 10:30 a.m., participants will gather at Centre Park across from Wareham Media for a ceremony at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, dedicated April 19, 1905, honoring local veterans from the French and Indian War through the Civil War.
The final ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the Bicentennial War Memorial at Town Hall, 54 Marion Road, installed in 1975 to commemorate the nation’s 200th anniversary and honor Wareham veterans
. Inside Town Hall, the Wareham Veterans Wall commemorates service members from the Revolutionary War to the present, accompanied by a Missing Man Chair recognizing prisoners of war, those missing in action and the fallen.
Additional commemorative events tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary are planned for Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
