Get in loser, we’re going to see Mean Girls at Wareham High School
It's time to meet the plastics as Wareham High School students prepare a spring production of “Mean Girls” that’s sure to be “so fetch.”
The Wareham Viking Theater Company will present the show at 6 p.m. Friday, May 29, 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, and at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 31.
Theater students, like Lilyan Medina who plays Cady Heron, felt that this year’s cast was particularly suited for the show.
“I think the cast was absolutely a perfect fit for what we had,” Medina said. “This was the win.”
Senior Abigail Balano is the student director of the show and said that she was impressed with the cast.
“They’re putting a lot of effort in,” Balano said. “And it’s really showing. I’m really proud of everyone.”
Theater company advisor Joey Ferro said that the decision to perform Mean Girls was a purposeful one. To decide on the show, he got a group of upperclassmen students together who explored many different options.
“They’re high school students so— they’re playing heightened versions of what they see every day,” Ferro said.
Ferro added that Wareham’s production is special as it plays with a lot of different stage elements, including using the curtains and implied set transitions. Ferro added that this year’s cast is particularly musically talented.
“We have some tremendous singers in our group right now,” Ferro said. “Some of which have just joined for this production, have never done drama before, so I was very impressed with them.”
Beyond being fit to perform in the role, Medina said she feels especially connected to her character of Cady in the show.
“Cady is me,” Medina said. “Everything about her is how I view myself. And I felt that if I was given the chance to play her, I could not only portray her as a character, but she would bring out a little bit of me and better myself as a person...”
Medina, who said she’s been in 12 productions during her time at school, felt that this year’s was the “most wholesome environment” she’s ever been a part of. She sais she is especially excited for the different outfits on stage.
“I love costume changes and there are so many,” Medina said.
Ferro said his favorite part of the show is the ending.
“I’ll keep it a mystery as to why,” Ferro said. “There’s an element of the ending that was my idea, I’m proud to say that, and I’m very happy with how funny it ended up coming out.”
