Former Vikings elected into high school athletics hall of fame
Former students, faculty, captains and all stars were etched into Viking history as seven individuals and one team were elected to the Wareham High School Athletics Hall of Fame during the 11th bi-annual Induction Ceremony.
The ceremony was hosted by the Wareham High School Athletics Hall of Fame Committee and took place at the Rosebrook Conference Center Saturday, Nov. 30. The inductees, along with many family and friends gathered to honor Vikings from the past 50 years.
The 2024 inductees are as follows:
Patricia Weygandt, graduated 1973 and played basketball, field hockey and track and field.
Terri Meehan, graduated 1981 and played basketball, track and field and cross country.
Merry Holway, graduated 1982 and played golf, basketball and volleyball.
Mathew Harbour, graduated 1993 and played baseball.
Anthony Messia, graduated 2004 and played football and baseball.
Aaron Strothers, graduated 2007 and played basketball.

Each inductee received a plaque for their hall of fame worthy careers and were introduced by someone close to them during the ceremony.
Phil LeFavor was a coach and longtime faculty member at the high school and is a member of the hall of fame committee. As a hall of famer himself, he said during his time in the school he saw the impact sports has had on many kids lives.
"As a coach, sports was one thing that kept a lot of our kids in line," said LeFavor. "These are the people that took all the lessons we tried to teach and they became outstanding in their field."
In many of the inductees acceptance speeches, they thanked loved ones and reflected on their time as a Viking.
Terri Meehan, a three sport athlete who still holds the javelin throw distance record at the high school said that she felt "honored because sports have always been a big part of Wareham."
"The community is very intertwined with sports," said Meehan. "It's a lot of good people here and it's great to see them again."
Aaron Strothers, a 1,000 point scorer led two undefeated basketball teams and was once the all time points leader for male students at the high school has continued his basketball career in Costa Rica and he explained some of his best memories come from the the comradery of the teams he was on.
"I've always remembered the bus rides after a win and getting on the bus with all the guys and joking and listening to music and going to Marc Anthony's after for a few slices of pizza," said Strothers.
Anthony Messia was inducted into the hall of fame for his career in both football and baseball. He was awarded many different honors including being named a three time south coast all conference player in football and a two time all conference player in baseball.
"I love this town, I grew up here and it made me the person I am today," said Messia. "I learned how to take on adversity and to never settle for complacency."
