Dorothy (Mestieri) Flaherty, 86

Dorothy (Mestieri) Flaherty, 86, Wareham, MA, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2021, in her home, surrounded by her children. Dorothy was the loving wife of the late William A. Flaherty, Sr. They celebrated 51 years of marriage before his passing in 2006. Born in Wareham, she was the youngest of seven children of the late Gaetano and Venusta (Bregoli) Mestieri. A graduate of Wareham High School, class of 1952, always remembered her school years as having been so much fun.

In 1955 she married Bill and together they raised seven children. Dorothy would tell you her greatest joy in life was being a wife, mother, and Nonny. Family always came first to both Dorothy and Bill.

Matriarch of the Mestieri family, Dorothy’s home and heart were always open to family and friends. She was very proud of her Italian heritage, having visited Italy numerous times. Always afraid you would leave her home hungry, she offered second and third portions to all who sat around her table, in true Italian fashion. She was full of life and was blessed to have always been surround by family and friends. Dorothy could also be found in the spectator’s stand of her grandchildren’s numerous soccer games, track meets, dances and band recitals.

She is survived by her three sons, William Flaherty, Jr. of Rochester, Michael Flahery of Ft. Myers, FL and Daniel Flaherty of West Wareham; and four daughters, Bridgette Sheridan of Onset, Kathleen Lyczynski of Halifax, Noreen Carey and Anne Berriault of Wareham. She was a loving Nonny to 15 grandchildren, cherished aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, and a friend to whomever met her. Dorothy was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, Wareham.

She was the youngest sister of the late Lisio and Albert Mestieri, Theresa Niemi, Mary Morris, Clara Blanchard, and R. Alice England.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, May 16, 2021, at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – Wareham, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. (Rt. 28), Wareham from 3 – 5 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 17th at St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham at 10 a.m. Those attending are asked to go directly to church.  Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham.
