A day of fun, family and remembrance

The Ashley Faye Foundation is hosting an evening full of fun, memories of loved ones, kickball and a movie for its annual Family Fun Day on Sunday, Aug. 16 at the Onset VFW from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The foundation hosts the day in honor of Ashley Faye, a lifelong Wareham resident who graduated from Wareham High School in 2010. She died suddenly at the age of 22 in 2015. 

The "fun day" includes the organization's annual adult kickball tournament, where players create teams in memory of loved ones. The game starts at 5 p.m. and teams are picked at 4:30 p.m., according to the organization. Participation costs $5, which covers the cost of a player T-shirt. Attendees can register to play on the day of the game. 

According to Faye's mother, Myrna Amado, the goal of the game is to play a "friendly kickball game" and keep alive the names and spirits of loved ones who have died. 

This year is the second time the foundation is hosting a kickball tournament. Attendees are invited to bring a picture of their loved ones to put on a memorial wall during the event. 

In addition to the adult kickball game, the "fun day" has several aspects geared for kids. Children are invited to bring their backpacks for a "fill your backpack" station for a school supplies giveaway ahead of the upcoming school year. There will also be science, technology, engineering and math stations for hands-on learning at the "fun day." 

Amado said the foundation has a projector screen and will play the movie "Swapped" starting after 7:30 p.m. Concessions, like popcorn and drinks, will also be available.
