Wareham hit record daily high heat records last week
Wareham hit a daily record high for last week's high temperatures.
According to Accuweather, Wareham hit highs of 98 degrees on Thursday, July 2 and 96 degrees on Friday, July 3, with high humidity through the end of the week. Thursday was the hottest July 2 in Wareham history, beating 1968's 92 degree day, according to the National Weather Service. Friday tied a 96 degree record set on July 3, 1913.
Wareham's overall hottest temperature on record was measured in East Wareham at 100 degrees on Aug. 28, 1948, according to the National Weather Service. Most recently, Wareham hit 100 degrees again on Aug. 2, 2006. Last week's high heat did not break that record.
The heat did, however, cause Wareham to open up a cooling center on Thursday and Friday to combat the "dangerously hot" temperatures. The National Weather Service projected heat index values could reach up to 108 degrees ahead of the weekend and placed Wareham under an "extreme heat warning."
Some services in town were impacted by the high temperatures.
Tobey Hospital reported a slight increase in patients between Wednesday, July 1 and Friday, July 3 with heat-related conditions like dehydration, dizziness and fainting.
According to a Comcast spokesperson, extreme heat and storms caused some service interruptions in Wareham due to storm-related damage. Crews worked to restore service and, according to Comcast, repair work was completed Monday morning.
It is currently unclear what impact the high heat had on Wareham emergency responders.
The Wareham Police Department and Wareham Fire Department did not immediately respond to Wareham Week's request for comment.
