YMCA distributes 200 Thanksgiving dinners

Nov 23, 2020

A line of cars snaked through the YMCA parking lot on Monday afternoon to pick up Thanksgiving dinner kits with turkey and all the fixings, including fresh produce.

This was the fifth year that the Y led the distribution of meals for the Wareham Area Clergy Association.

The meals were assembled by volunteers and handed out by YMCA staff, volunteers, and employees from Covanta-SEMASS who helped assemble and distribute meals.

Cathy Longfield, who coordinated the program, thanked many donors: BASE Seafood Auction in New Bedford contributed turkeys; Jonathan’s Sprouts of Rochester donated one pound bags of carrots and ten pound bags of potatoes; the Dartmouth YMCA’s Sharing the Harvest farm pitched in squashes; area churches donated dry and canned goods; Stop & Shop donated gift cards; and the South Shore Community Action Council donated several hundred pounds of food.

All recipients signed up ahead of time. Longfield said the program reached capacity in 13 days.

The YMCA also donated meals for 20 families to the Woods of Wareham.

The YMCA has increased its food distribution projects greatly this year, and will be hosting its next Community Market at 11 a.m. on December 11.
