Weave a story on the stage with the poetry club
Event Date
Words can come to life with the Wareham Poetry Club as they host their first annual open mic night.
The event will take place Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m. in the Wareham High School Auditorium, 7 Viking Drive. Guests can watch students perform a variety of acts from monologues, poetry readings to singing.
English Language Arts teacher Jessica Teixeira is the advisor for the club and has watched it grow after its 2025 revival. She said that with a variety of grades participating that every student supports one another through their writing journeys.
"That's been one of my favorite things to witness as a teacher is to see how they support each other," Teixeira said.
Wednesdays after school the students gather to write poetry based on prompts Teixeira gives them. With time to share their work, students can receive feedback from peers and take their poems to local reading events the club sometimes attends.
The idea for an open mic night came after the club attended Bourne High School's poetry slam in early February 2025. Students attending didn't have time to organize an event with the remainder of the school year.
"Students this year have really taken the reins and ran with it," she said.
The past few months, students submitted work to be performed on the stage, ensuring that they had enough time to organize the event. Teixeira is including other arts-related programs within the school at the open mic night.
"The choir and band, run by (Jason) Roth, are going to open and close the night," she said.
The event is free to attend and will have snacks for sale. Poetry books that students have been working on will potentially be made for sale.
