The Wareham Tigers Cheer Athletics hosted their annual showcase for 14 recreational cheerleading teams to hit the mat and show off their skills Sunday, Nov. 23.
The Wareham Tigers Cheer Athletics is an offshoot of the Wareham Tigers Athletic Association dedicated to competitive cheerleading. At their fourth annual showcase, President Damon Solomon said his goal is to give each team a fun atmosphere before heading into competition season.
“We wanted to treat it like a party so in the hallway as the kids are getting ready, it’s as if they’re getting ready in their rooms jamming out and having fun,” Solomon said.
Of the 14 participating teams, six of them were from Wareham representing not only the tigers cheer athletics but also the Wareham Tigers Athletic Association and Wareham High School.
Solomon said he wanted each time to start their season off with a showcase instead of competition because for the next several months, the teams are going to be under a lot of pressure during competition season.
“The teams come as they are and sometimes they make mistakes and that’s fine,” he said. “The important thing is that they have fun and get ready for their competition season.”
Taelynn Wiley, 12, is on the tigers cheer athletics team Spirit and said her team’s performance was good and everyone was “really excited to perform.”
She added there are still several competitions on the horizon which she is hoping her team can perform well in.
“I’m hoping to have really good routines throughout the whole year,” Taelynn said.
The “team mom” for Spirit Tiffany Mcalony added she feels a great sense of pride in watching the girls perform and grow throughout the season.
“I love seeing the girls grow throughout the year,” Mcalony said. “It’s an amazing thing to watch.”
Last year Mcalony said one of team Spirit’s members demonstrated a lot of growth throughout the year.
“There was a girl last year that started off almost like she didn’t really want to be there but by the end of the season, she was all in and did really well,” Mcalony said.
Over the event’s four years, Solomon said it has continued to grow starting from five teams to this year’s 14 and he hopes it grows even more.
“My goal is to have as many teams as possible — that would be a good time,” he said.
