A Wareham man and United States Postal Service employee has been charged with theft after allegedly taking $60 from a woman while wearing his uniform, police say.

Wareham Police charged Thomas Medeiros, 63, with larceny from a person on Oct. 20 after he reportedly reached into a woman’s purse and took $60 cash.

The victim said she set her purse down briefly on a counter in the Cumberland Farms on Main Street at about 6:50 a.m. She then went in the back of the store to make a purchase. When she returned the money was missing. Wareham Police reviewed security footage and reportedly saw Medeiros take the money while in his uniform.

Police said an investigation revealed Medeiros worked for the postal service near Taunton. Wareham authorities asked Taunton police to arrest Medeiros. He was taken into custody at about 12:15 p.m.

Police said the stolen money was recovered. Medeiros was bailed pending an appearance in Wareham District Court, scheduled for Oct. 22.
