Wareham Police officer injured during arrest

A Wareham Police officer was injured when a woman allegedly resisting arrest intentionally fell to the ground and dragged two officers down. 

According to officials, police responded to the Depot Crossing Apartments on Wednesday at about 3:15 p.m. for a reported disturbance. Police said a woman was asked to leave the property but refused, saying she would have to be arrested. 

The woman, Tracey Wightman, 37, of East Wareham started screaming and thrashing after she was arrested by Officer Christopher Smith.

Officer Matthew Donovan then assisted Smith in controlling Wightman, who then intentionally fell to the ground pulling both officers with her, police said. The fall injured Donovan’s knee. Donovan was treated and released from Tobey Hospital. However, he remains out of work do to his injury.

Wightman has been charged with: two counts of violation of a harassment prevention order, assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.
