Vikings Hockey open season with a win

The Wareham/Carver boys hockey team won the first game of the season on Saturday, trouncing Upper Cape with a final score of 10-4.

In the first period, Viking Nate Eldredge scored a power play goal, assisted by Tyler Lovendale and Quirino doCanto. Upper Cape scored, but James L'Heureux put the Vikings ahead again, with a goal assisted by Wylde Latulippe. Just before the end of the period, Zach Barris secured a two-goal lead by tucking in a rebound, assisted by DoCanto and Lovendale.

In the second period, Bryan Gallagher opened the scoring, and L’Heureux put in his second goal of the game. Upper Cape also scored twice, but remained behind the Vikings with a score of 5-3.

DoCanto opened the third period with three back-to-back goals. Upper Cape scored once, but Viking Brayden Fernald scored, as did L’Heureux for his third goal of the night.

Goalie Alex DeMarco saved 27 of the 31 shots he faced.

The Vikings’ next game will be a home game against Dennis-Yarmouth at the Gallo Arena in Bourne at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 18, which will also be the third annual Ugly Sweater Night. There will be prizes for the best sweaters.

Dec. 28 will be Military Appreciation Night. The game against Nauset will begin at 8 p.m. at the Gallo Ice Arena, 231 Sandwich Rd, Buzzards Bay, and admission will be free for active or retired military personnel with an ID. 

The team will also be collecting donations for care packages for soldiers. Items including high-quality socks, toiletries, hand warmers, Vicks vaporub, sewing kits, sunflower seeds, beef jerky, gum, and lens cleaning cloths will be accepted.
