The Wareham High School girls basketball team is off to a 2 win and zero loss start to the year following a 9 win and 11 loss 2024-2025 campaign.
Editor Bobby Grady caught up with head coach Mike Fortune after the Vikings 53 to 33 win over Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School Wednesday, Dec. 17.
Q: That’s a 20-point win in the home opener so how are you feeling?
A: I feel okay, in the first half we did not play well at all. We just weren’t executing much of anything and we were trying to play way too fast. At halftime we got in the locker room, slowed everything down and we played much better.
Q: What have you been working on in practice so far?
A: We’re going to face a lot of zone [defense] so we’re getting a lot of shots up and working on a lot of swing passes. We’re trying to work on rebounding and that’s primarily it.
Q: What are your expectations for the team this year?
A: It's hard to tell. We’ve got everybody back except one girl but we did get an eighth grader that brings a ton of energy. I’m hoping we can get 12 or 13 wins and I obviously want to make the state tournament. Our goals are to win our conference and make the tournament.
Q: What makes this particular team unique?
A: This particular team put a lot of work in during the offseason. They really worked on getting their footwork better, getting more shots and they were always in the gym. Overall I think the work ethic of the team is a lot stronger.
Q: Who are the players to watch for this year?
A: I would say Johnny Tompkins is our leader and then it’s Donavyn Dejesus and Kobe Ferguson. Kobe Ferguson is only an eighth grader but she’s high energy — she just doesn’t stop.
The Vikings will travel to Canton to face off against Blue Hills Regional High School Monday, Dec. 22 for their next game.
