Two Wareham businesses will receive $75,000 covid-19 small business grants

Jan 2, 2021

Dorothy Cox's Candies Inc. in Wareham and the Creative Development Child Center — also known as Sandy’s School — in East Wareham will each receive grants of $75,000 through the Covid-19 Small Business Grant Program.

Sandy Boucher, who owns Sandy’s School and has been in the childcare business for 35 years, said it was great to get the grant because she wants to keep her business running through the covid crisis.

“When people go back to work, they need childcare centers open,” she said. “We’ve been fortunate to have survived, and with the grant we’ll survive more.”

Dorothy Cox’s Candies makes and sells a variety of sweets, including things like chocolate, peanut brittle, taffy, ice cream bars and more. Dorothy Cox’s Candies has a location in Fairhaven, but the grant will support the company’s factory and store located in Wareham at 8 Kendrick Rd.

Massachusetts State Senator Marc Pacheco, who represents the 1st Plymouth and Bristol District (which includes Wareham), announced on Dec. 31, 2020, that Dorothy Cox’s Candies and Sandy’s School were included in a group of 21 local businesses that will receive $1,205,000 in the second round of covid-19 grant funding.

“With the ongoing pandemic causing major economic disruption for so many local businesses, I am proud to have fought for the inclusion of these additional resources in the annual legislative budget,” Pacheco said in a press release.

The Covid-19 Small Business Grant Program received over 10,000 applications, according to Pacheco’s press release.

This story will be updated to include reactions from the business owners if/when possible.
