Two former Gatemen elected to Cape Cod League Hall of Fame
WEST YARMOUTH — Two former players with the Wareham Gatemen, Pat Neshek and Andrew Calica, have been included in the 2024 Class of Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame.
Committee co-chairs John Garner and Mary Henderson announced the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame induction class for 2024 at the Cape League’s annual First Pitch Brunch.
Neshek led the Gatemen to a 2001 Cape Cod League championship with a 4-2 record in 14 games, including six saves, 29 strikeouts and only one earned run, and a 0.41 ERA.
Known for his unorthodox pitching style, Nehek’s submarine delivery finished with sidearm motion, developed after a baseball struck his forearm in high school.
The Minnesota Twins selected Neshek in the sixth round of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft, and he pitched for them from 2006 to 2010 (missing 2009 due to Timmy John surgery). He went on to pitch for San Diego, Oakland, St. Louis, Houston, Colorado and Philadelphia in a 13-year career. His career marks include a 36-25 record, with a 2.82 ERA and 471 strikeouts, and he was selected to the MLB All-Star game in 2014 and 2017.
Calicia, a UC Santa Barbara product, won the 2015 Cape League batting title with the Gatemen, hitting a .425 and leading the league in on-base percentage with .480. His batting average that season was the fifth highest in Cape League modern history.
He was drafted in the eleventh round by Cleveland and spent the next four seasons (2016-19) in the minor leagues, hitting .292 overall with 15 home runs, 125 RBI and 56 stolen bases.
The Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Wequassett Resort in Harwich. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting the Cape Cod Baseball League store or by calling Mary Henderson at 508-922-7388.
