The students that made football games the place to be

Under the Friday night lights as Wareham Football players duke it out for a chance at the playoffs, the student section can be heard chanting and cheering for their team— win or lose.
Junior Gianna Hernandez and senior McKenna Duggan were decked out in pink for the homecoming game theme against rivals Upper Cape Cod Regional Vocational Technical High School. The two can be found most Fridays at Spillane Field shouting out onto the turf.
Gianna said the push for a lively student section came from envy.
"Recently we went to another schools football game and they had a good student section and we got jealous," Gianna said. "We just decided to make one of our own."
Past games saw students scattered throughout the stands with a lack of enthusiasm for the players in front of them, according to Gianna. She said she spread the word and tried to bring everybody together.
Part of what makes a good student section is the chants— those of which Gianna said they didn't have to teach. The student section echoed their cheers without prior experience.
"We got inspiration from other people and we just did simple chants," she said.
Gianna said getting her peers together has helped motivate the team regardless of the score. The first home game against the Carver Crusaders saw a 0 to 34 loss for the Wareham Vikings yet the stands were filled with cheering fans throughout all four quarters.
"The players talk about us in school— how much they love the student section," Gianna said. "We just hope to motivate them and get some wins for our team."
For McKenna who is excited at the prospect of graduation, she said she hasn't seen school spirit this much until now. Her last homecoming game is special as it sees familiar faces in the opposing team.
A large sum of ormer Wareham students crossed the bridge and now play for the Upper Cape Tech Rams. As the game wore on the chants from the cheer team and student section could be heard from down the street.
"It's going to be crazy," McKenna said. "I don't want to be anywhere else but here."
For both of the girls, while winning is fun they hope to leave behind a legacy.
"I'm going to keep doing this until I'm a senior," Gianna said. "And we'll try to leave it for other classes because having a student section has been really fun."
