Spooky creatures haunt the waters of Onset Bay
The beaches in Onset aren't packed with swimsuit-wearing patrons with fall in full swing, yet the bay is still full of activity.
The Onset Bay Center hosted its annual Halloween Paddle Parade Sunday, Oct. 26 that saw dozens of costume-clad guests cruise around Wickets Island and back.
Paddleboards, kayaks and canoes made their way through the chilly autumn waters in what Center Director, Angie Weldon, said is an alternate way to celebrate Halloween.
"We want to do our part to offer a community event that is a little bit different," she said. "So getting people out on the water in their costumes isn't something you'd think about doing, especially in October. But we're excited to put this on and keep people outside."
Weldon said the center gets a variety of age ranges and costumes each year. From witches to salads, the bay saw many different creatures and characters paddling through the water.
Trading their broomsticks for kayaks, Jamie McGarrahan and Mallory Callinan were ready to hit the waters with fresh green face paint. The pair were going for the, "classic witch," look and were not aiming to be "beautiful witches."
"I mean look at me," Callinan said, pointing to her green face, "We chose witches because we're powerful women that's why."
The pair's kayaks were on theme, filled with spiders from summer storage. No appearance of long-legged creatures would rain on their spellbinding outfits according to Callinan.
"If you hear screaming its all part of the character and I'm not having a panic attack," she said.
Rosita Coutts showed that goats can paddle as she joined in on the event following a summer full of kayaking. With her was her stuffed animal, Cinnamon Roll.
"I like the fun adventures we go on," Rosita said.
Hoping to see fish in the bay, Rosita said that she would be in charge of leading the kayak. As Halloween approaches she said she can't wait to spend time at her friends house and go trick or treating.
While the air gets colder, the events at the Onset Bay Center won't stop. Fans of the center can expect a shellfishing Thanksgiving event and to see Wickets Island lit up for the Holiday season with dates and information to come.
