Softball ‘sets the benchmark’ with Sweet 16 appearance
While the Wareham Girls Softball team lost its round-of-sixteen match to Georgetown Middle High School on Wednesday, June 5, the experience provided good learnings for the young team, according to Head Coach Rudy Cadena.
“This year’s team set the benchmark for the next couple of years,” Cadena said.
The squad didn’t get rattled at all in the 2-3 loss, which marked the team’s best result in several seasons.
At the start of the year, the team focused on getting its chemistry built, and was able to play as a whole toward the later part of the season, said Cadena: it “feels great watching them grow together.”
The team picked up numerous accolades across the course of its season.
It closed out the regular season in 20th position in Division 5 with a 16 and 4 record. Four of its players — Jossalyn Anctil, Jolee Anderson, Olivia Lacava and Madison Nereu — were chosen for the Mayflower Conference All-Star Team, and Nereu was voted conference MVP.
It has been “a great season for our girls,” Cadena added. “They worked hard and they deserved it.”
