“I mean this is awesome,” said Mighty Mites Head Coach Adam Giacomozzi. “This is our third year trying to win this. My little team of 14 kids playing against teams of 30— this is awesome.”
The Mighty Mites, competed in and hosted the Mighty Bowl, a double elimination tournament for youth football teams in age 5 to 10-years-old range, Saturday, Nov. 1.
“The game felt really good,” said 7-year-old Max Bonville. “My favorite part was scoring a touchdown.”
For the last three years, Wareham has hosted the all day tournament that brought 13 teams from across South Eastern Massachusetts to Spillane Field.
Giacomozzi began organizing the event three years ago because this specific age group did not have playoffs or a championship, unlike the three other Tigers teams.
“We started at eight teams and this year we could’ve had 16 but a couple teams canceled at the last minute,” he said.
Giacomozzi added the event has been great for the kids because otherwise, they miss out on the chance to win a championship.
“There’s no records, there’s no playoffs there’s nothing so this gives them something to play for,” he said.
The Mighty Mites entered the tournament with a perfect 11 win and 0 loss record.
The team’s first-round matchup was against Whitman youth football which the Mighty Mites won 28 to 6.
Seven-year-old Ronnie Ferguson said his favorite part about the game was both getting stops on defense and scoring touchdowns.
Additionally, 7-year-old Matthew Depesn said his favorite parts of the season have been being with his team.
“I really like to be with my friends and my teammates,” Matthew said.
After the first game, Wareham’s unbeaten record remained, defeating Abington, Bridgewater and Bridgewater again in the finals.
