High School theater students win awards at festival

Two Wareham High School students, members of the school’s Viking Theater Company, won acting awards at the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild’s High School Theater Festival semifinals, held in Weymouth on Saturday, March 18.

Sage Kidder and Daniella (Rye) Amezian were praised for their performances as Devious and Orderly, respectively, in the high school’s production of Brent Holland’s play “An Experiment.”

The play opens on five sedated “patients” woken up by Dr. Soles (played by Aiden Dillen), who kidnaps people and forces them to participate in sadistic experiments.

Pumped with amnesia-inducing drugs, Dr. Soles’s five victims are given name tags with a single personality trait — Devious, Courageous (Koral Davis), Impulsive (Peyton Smith), Compassionate (Addison “Basil” Freeman) and Orderly. Will their new names dictate how they navigate their terrifying ordeal, or will they regain memories of their former selves?

The play was directed by senior Laura Clements.

While the Viking Theater Company did not make it to the state finals, drama advisor Candy Johansen said that she is proud of what her students have accomplished.

The Vikings’ production of “An Experiment” previously won three awards for acting and one for lighting and sound design at the High School Theater Festival in Bourne on Saturday, March 4.
