David Charles Hunter, 74
WAREHAM – David Charles Hunter, 74, of West Wareham, passed away on September 24, 2026, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River. He was the loving husband of Barbara (Akins) Hunter and the son of the late Charles Ellsworth and Anne Marie (Blondin) Hunter.
Dave was born in Wareham and lived there his whole life, graduating from Wareham High School in 1969. After high school he began his career as a Master Plumber, working for his father’s company, Charles E. Hunter Company, Inc., which was founded in 1970. He took over the company in 1990 serving countless customers over his nearly 50 years on the job until his retirement in 2018.
Dave enjoyed spending time with friends on the golf course and at the bowling alley. He was a life member of the Wankinquoah Rod & Gun Club where he enjoyed fishing. These activities gave Dave the opportunity to simultaneously make memories and tell stories, always with a little bit of a twinkle in his eye and a charismatic smirk. He was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making meals for family and friends. He was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, the Boston Celtics and Bruins, and any sports teams that involved watching his grandsons.
As the oldest of seven siblings Dave had a natural sense of community. He was so proud of everyone in his family and would be glad to tell tales of all their wonderful accomplishments. Dave was also very involved in the Wareham community, frequently attending St. Patrick’s Church and ushering at St. Anthony’s. He coached Little League for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Barbara (Akins) Hunter; a daughter, Heather L. DeWitt and her husband, Derek of Cheshire, CT; 3 grandchildren, Brandon, Jason and Matthew DeWitt all of Cheshire, CT; 2 brothers, Bruce Hunter and his wife, Beverly of Palm Coast, FL and Charles Hunter and his wife, Kristine of Norton; 4 sisters, MaryAnne Doyon of Clearwater, FL, Janet Hunter and her husband, Jeffrey Skaros of Grafton, WI, Barbara Spinney and her husband, John of Norfolk, MA and Dr. Nancy Corliss and her husband, Jordan Busch of Wayland; many nephews, nieces, and great nephews and great nieces. He is also survived by his beloved dog and companion, Buddy.
Visiting hours are from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – WAREHAM, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham. A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
