Craft fair puts high-school students' business sense on display

The students of the Wareham High School DECA held the club's second annual craft fair on Saturday, Nov. 18.
DECA is a national organization that helps budding entrepreneurs prepare for a career in business through projects and competitions. The Wareham High School has a local chapter.
"It's just a lot of different things," said Priscilla, one of the students running the event.
She said that the student members of DECA did the organizing for the craft fair, including reaching out to and arranging for vendors.
Another student, Jessie, said the event was going well.
DECA members were the ones walking around, helping vendors and running the event, she said. "We learn so much."
"It's been a great learning experience for the kids," said Lisa Cunha, the academic advisor for Wareham DECA.
Putting together the event helped teach students project management skills, she said. "I help, but it's their ideas — they put it together, they do the work."
Several of the 30 plus vendors in attendance learned of the event through fliers distributed throughout the community.
Susan Babij brought her made-from-scratch soaps and jewelry, setting up her first-ever craft fair booth.
A friend of hers works at the YMCA, and sent her the advertisement, she said.
Other booths were set up by students, including one from the Wareham High School Art Club.
