'The best in many years': Multiple high school sports make it to playoffs

May 27, 2025

As the end of the school year nears the excitement for spring sports isn't waning. Three teams from Wareham High School are playoff bound — something the sports department hasn't seen in over a decade.

Boys tennis, softball and baseball will be advancing to the playoffs.

Softball and baseball do not have their first round matchups yet and boys tennis will take on Bourne High School Thursday, May 29 at Bourne at 3:30 p.m.

Girls tennis will be competing for a spot in the playoffs against Groton-Dunstable Regional High School Wednesday, May 28 at Wareham High School. The results of the match will be posted to wareham.theweektoday.com.

Athletic Director Ed Rodriguez said that in the 12 years he has been on staff, this is the first time multiple teams are advancing. Among the recent successes, the girls track team won the championship in their division.

"I'm very pleased," he said. "It's the best showing for Wareham spring sports in a long, long time."

Softball earned their spot in the playoffs as first in the league, winning 21 games and losing only one.

Rodriguez said the baseball team, full of mostly younger players, and the softball team have drawn the biggest crowds at games. He said there's excitement about sports in the halls of the school and a confidence in the student athletes advancing.

"We're very excited to just play," Rodriguez said. "If we win some games that would be great and if we don't that's okay too."
