Acorns to Oaks brings back-to-school clothes to the community

Over 130 students will be going back to school in style thanks to the Acorns to Oaks’ second annual back-to-school clothing drive.

In partnership with Walt’s Mobile Closet, local families collected new attire on Aug. 19 at the Gleason Family YMCA.

“When you go back to school, you want to wear your best outfit,” explained Acorns to Oaks President Jody Santagate.

Santagate explained that the foundation holds the drive because shopping for back-to-school can be stressful for families in need.

“We know every child in Wareham is going to go to school with a new outfit and a new pair of shoes,” said Santagate. “They will be able to look good and feel good.”

Walt’s Mobile Closet provides free clothing for anyone in need. The organization set up tables with backpacks, shoes and racks of clothing for all ages.

“We have 127 backpacks filled with school supplies, and I would love to leave with zero,” said Whitney Tully, the director of Walt’s Mobile Closet.

Cindi Duggan from Covanta Structural Engineers Association of Massachusetts, a waste-to-energy facility, helped to support the drive this year.

“They had 14 kids on the waiting list and we took them all in,” explained Duggan. “I don’t think any kid should be left behind.”

“Everybody wants to help in some way that is meaningful and I can’t think of a better way than to help in your local community,” said Duggan.

With support from 13 local organizations and businesses, including the Wareham Police Association, Wareham Fire Association Local 2810 and Bombas Socks, the foundation raised over $3,600 for students.
