The Sippican Historical Society invites the community to an overview of 200 years of photographic history and share tips to keep your digital photos available for the future on February 19.
Since 1826, when Nicéphore Niépce captured his garden view, a new way to remember events and people opened. What was once an unusual object can now be shared instantly around the world. Will your digital photos be accessible in the future?
Discover hidden gems in the SHS collection and bring some of yours. Learn best practices for storing your own family photos to prevent damage from light, humidity, and handling and document them for future software. The event will be held at the Sippican Historical Society, located at 141 Front St, from 2pm to 3pm on February 19. SHS encourages participants to bring their vintage photographs, postcards, and other visual documents depicting life in Marion and the surrounding areas. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to scan these items on-site, allowing owners to contribute to the digital archive while retaining their original physical copies.
"Photos for the Future" underscores the vital role that personal collections play in telling the complete story of a community. While the Society maintains an extensive collection, many of the most significant moments in local history are stored in family albums and shoeboxes in private homes. By digitizing these images, the Society hopes to fill gaps in the historical record and provide researchers, students, and future residents with a more comprehensive view of the past.

The session will also highlight some of the "hidden gems" already discovered in the Society’s archives, showcasing how a single image can illuminate forgotten aspects of daily life.
