I grew up here. I've lived in Dartmouth almost my whole life, and I've watched the coffee scene go from "you have three Dunkins and a Honey Dew" to actually pretty great. The South Coast has caught up.
Below are a few of the spots I send people to when they ask, and the ones I genuinely go to myself. This isn't every coffee shop in town. It's the ones worth the trip.
Scuttlebutt — Padanaram Village
Scuttlebutt [https://www.scuttlebuttpadanaram.com] in Padanaram is the one. If you only have time for one stop, make it Scuttlebutt. They're right by the bridge, they pour Tandem coffee out of Portland Maine, they make their own syrups in house, and the patio in the summer is one of the best spots in town to sit with a drink. The food is the kind of thing where the avocado toast is actually good and not a punchline. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Mirasol's Café — North Dartmouth
Mirasol's Café [https://mirasolscafe.com] on State Road is the local institution. The chippi is famous on the South Coast for a reason. Nobody really seems to know exactly what's in it, including the employees, which has become part of the legend at this point. It's almost definitely terrible for you, but also ridiculously good. There's almost always a line. It's worth it.
Lovers Bakery — State Road
Lovers Bakery [https://loversbakerydartmouth.com] on State Road isn't technically a coffee shop, but if you care about pastry, this matters. The croissants are properly laminated, butter all the way through. Husband and wife team, the kindest people in town. Pair a croissant from here with coffee from anywhere else on this list and you've got a perfect Saturday morning.
Java Shack — Faunce Corner
Java Shack [https://www.javashackcoffee.com] at Faunce Corner is the move if you're heading to Boston or Providence and want a real cup before you get on the highway. Cute spot, friendly staff, the Portuguese breakfast sandwich is a standout. The kind of place that's quietly built a following without trying to be trendy about it.
Farm & Coast Market — Padanaram
Farm & Coast Market [https://farmandcoast.com] is right across the bridge from Scuttlebutt in Padanaram. Part deli, part café, part general store, and the coffee bar inside is solid. If Scuttlebutt has a line out the door (it will), walk over here.
Lolly's — Smith Mills
Lolly's [https://www.lollysdartmouth.com] in Smith Mills is a diner with a real coffee bar, which is rarer than it sounds. Gluten free options, kid-friendly everything, and the kind of waitstaff that remembers you. If you want a full breakfast and a coffee that's not from a pot that's been sitting since 5 AM, this is your spot.
Honorable Mentions
There are a few honorable mentions worth knowing too. Marylou's on Faunce Corner if you want something quick and sweet, and Ground Floor Coffee in New Bedford if you'll cross the bridge.
