Free summer food program for kids returns
Free breakfast and lunch will be made available for kids 18-years-old and under through the Wareham Public Schools summer food program beginning on Tuesday, July 1.
Meals will be available at Wareham High School located at 7 Viking Drive and the east side entrance of Wareham Elementary School located at 63 Minot Avenue.
Meals will be available for six weeks every Monday through Thursday beginning July 1 except on July 4. Breakfast will be held from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
All meals must be eaten at the schools according to Wareham Public Schools Food Services Director Mike Russo.
He added the meals are for anyone 18 and under, not just Wareham Public Schools students.
Russo said the meals are based on United States Department of Agriculture regulations. He said breakfast will include a carton of milk, a fruit item like apple sauce or raisins and a grain item like an individually wrapped Pop-Tart or muffin.
Lunch will consist of a carton of milk, a fruit and vegetable, a grain and meat or meat replacement, Russo said. He added the grain and meat will typically be a sandwich or wrap.
“We’ll be doing hot sandwiches like a hamburger or hot dog on two days and on others it might be a regular ham and cheese sandwich or something like that,” Russo said.
The program will also feed kids participating in summer programs at the school, Russo said.
“It provides a source of nutrition for children in the community and it can help parents feed their children,” he said.
