Fourth grade musicians end the year with positively sound concert
As fourth graders’ time dwindles at Wareham Elementary School, they had one more concert to put on before closing the curtain and moving on to the middle school.
The elementary school held their spring concert Thursday, June 5 where fourth grade students displayed the musical abilities they gained during the school year.
The evening of music began with the fourth grade concert band performing seven songs followed by the chorus who sang five songs and closed the show out with a mashup of The Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun” and Katy Perry’s “Roar.”
“I think it went good and it was a nice show,” said Music Teacher and band and chorus Director Russ Hart. “I think they presented themselves in a very positive light and brought their A game.”
Positivity was the theme of the concert according to Hart, with a lot of the songs featuring happy lyrics and an overall good vibe.
“The band has the ending in the “Sports Medley” that gives them a chance to rock and roll and all the lyrics in the songs represent a positive approach to life,” he said.
The spring concert is the second of two performances the fourth graders put on during the year and Hart said preparation did not start after the first concert, but at the beginning of the year.
“We practice Tuesday mornings before school for the band and Thursday mornings for the chorus which is something different for us,” he said. “They all had to learn their instruments together as opposed to it being a group of flutes or a group of trumpets.”
Hart added he saw a lot of growth throughout the year and many of the kids are “future rock stars in the making.”
“They weren’t sure which end of the instrument to blow into at the beginning but now they’re doing great by themselves,” he said. “They can sit and play these songs by themselves and that’s the goal.”
With middle school on the horizon, many fourth graders said they plan to continue to play and sing into the fifth grade.
“I like that I can express myself,” Catalina Priestly said.
Standing next to Catalina during the concert was Bobbi Kerrigan who said she wants to be a professional singer because her dad works in the music industry.
“My dad does reggae so I want to sing reggae,” Bobbi said.
