Civilians help extinguish 2-alarm structure fire
A 2-alarm fire at the 7-Eleven and Dunkin Donuts drive through located at 3 Barker Road was reported around 11 a.m., Monday, April 21.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Mark Rogers, the Wareham Fire Department received a call for a potential propane tank explosion and discovered the exterior back side of the building had been burned.
“We had burning leaves, a lot of smoke and the fire was knocked down by employees with fire extinguishers,” Rogers said.
7-Eleven employee Tony Rego said he heard Dunkin Donuts employees shout fire before grabbing the extinguishers.
“We came out and there was fire everywhere,” Rego said.
Cheryl Silda was waiting for her granddaughter to finish an interview at Dunkin Donuts when she realized the building was on fire.
“I could smell the smoke and I could see all the black smoke and said ‘I’m going to get my ‘granddaughter,’” Silda said.
Silda alerted Dunkin Donuts employee Lacey Caballaro at the drive through who alerted the other employees to get out.
“I was like let’s go let’s get out!” Caballaro said.
Upon arrival, Rogers said crews hooked up to fire hydrants and removed burned sections of the building off the roof and rear exterior so the heat would not cause another fire.
The Onset Fire Department also responded and determined the fire had not spread inside the building.
“Overall good job by all,” Rogers said.
