Report of persons in distress triggered Thursday’s rest stop search
On Thursday, June 27, first responders gathered at the I-195 rest area between exits 35 and 39, searching for a missing person.
The Wareham Fire Department has reported the search was triggered by a report of people possibly in the water in distress.
According to the Wareham Fire Department, “one person whose initial report prompted the response was transported to the hospital; however, no other victims were located.”
“It looks like the missing person was located and the scene cleared shortly after 1 p.m.,” reported Massachusetts State Police.
The identity of the formerly missing person is still unknown at this time.
Over 20 Wareham firefighters under the command of Chief John Kelley began a search of the area by boat and land, and were later joined by other public safety agencies. First responders on the scene included Wareham Police officers, Wareham fire fighters, Marion fire fighters and Massachusetts State Police. State Police helicopters, K9 units and marine units also responded, according to State Police.
“The search area consisted of woods, beaches, and waterways,” according to Massachusetts State Police.
According to Harbormaster Garry Buckminster, first responders weren’t entirely sure on what the circumstances were on-site, because “the story kept changing.”
While initial reports claimed the missing person was possibly with a child, first responders continued searching until they were able to confirm that everyone was accounted for and that the family’s children were safe, said Buckminster.
Wareham fire units on the scene included Chief Kelley, Assistant Chiefs Haskell and Rogers, along with Marine 1, Special Operations 1, Squad 2, Rescue 1, and Engine 5. A Marion engine assisted at the scene while the Onset Fire Department supplied an engine for coverage at Station 1. Massachusetts Department of Fire Services were requested and sent two pieces of equipment. In addition, multiple police agencies and Wareham EMS were on scene.
