Garage fire, fuel spill keep firefighters busy
Wareham and Onset first responders had an eventful morning on Friday, June 28, responding to multiple calls.
At around 10:50 a.m., the Wareham Fire Department responded to Tobey Road for a spill of over 100 gallons of diesel fuel. Assistant Chief Patrick Haskell determined that the department’s on-duty crew would be tied up at that scene for a long period of time, and recalled off-duty personnel to staff the station.
At around 11:46 a.m., a call was received for a vehicle fire inside an attached garage on Wareham Lake Shore Drive.
An Onset Fire Department engine, coming back from another call, responded to the scene and began suppressing the fire. It appeared that a vehicle in the garage caught fire, and the fire extended to the building. Wareham Fire Chief John Kelley and an engine from the Wareham Fire Department arrived afterward, and the crews put out the fire in around 20 minutes.
There were no injuries in the fire. However, the building was heavily damaged, and required extensive overhaul.
