Through beaches and bogs: Buzzards Bay Coalition cycles through Wareham
As people cycled through coastal Massachusetts farmland and felt the ocean breeze in their face, riders raised money for the Buzzards Bay Coalition during the 18th annual Watershed Ride.
This year, over 320 riders took on a 100, 75 or 35 mile route that brought cyclists on a tour of the South Coast, Rhode Island and upper Cape Cod. The ride led them past coastal farmlands, windswept beaches, cranberry bogs and scenic harbors.
Riders cycled through Wareham as the route took them down High Street and Narrows Road until they hit Onset village where they made their way toward Cape Cod.
As a fundraiser, the event has raised over $240,000 that the coalition will put toward educational outreach and restoration projects for Buzzards Bay.
On top of being an important fundraiser for the group, Buzzards Bay Coalition communications manager Sarah Palestine explained some of the unseen impact the event has.
"It's definitely also an awareness builder for people to see the beauty of Buzzards Bay and see some of the properties that we have protected along the route," said Palestine.
According to Palestine, over 100 volunteers came out to help put the ride on and they were "really critical to the success of the ride."
Palestine explained the coalition is always looking to grow the event and encourages anyone interested in riding or volunteering for the event to get involved.
